Skiathos is the nearest island to the mainland in the northwest Aegean Sea with an area of 50 square km. There are four main islands in the Sporades complex, Skiathos is the busiest one. Also known as the Queen of the Sporades, this island has an eventful history dating back to 338 BC from Macedonian rule to becoming possessed by the Gizi family in 1207 during the Byzantine period. The Gizi brothers built an imposing fortress in the peninsula of Bourtzi which separates the main harbor of Skiathos in two areas. This fortress can also be visited today and was mainly used at the time to protect Skiathos against pirates who continued to raid the island for nearly half a millennium. This Venetian fortress sought a second attempt to protect the Skiathians in the northern part of the island, Kastro which was intended to be the capital of Skiathos. Today, Kastro is a popular tourist destination but the main capital belongs to the Port of Skiathos following the peace of the Greek revolution. Here you will get to see whitewashed houses, walk through narrow streets and see boats come and go in the Bourtzi peninsula, where many catamarans, sailing boats and fishing vessels dock in one of the most sheltered bays in Greece. The town has a main street named after the famous greek novelist Alexandros Papadiamantis (1841-1911) Whose house has been transformed into a museum, a showcase of his professional literary work. Besides the opportunity to visit those interesting attractions, the island of Skiathos is suitable for all kinds of ages and budgets, from families who want to enjoy a culinary journey in the numerous taverns and restaurants to party enthusiasts who are looking a typical night out in the many bars and clubs and of course the sailing adventurers who want to enjoy the magnificent beaches along the coastline.

With more than 60 wonderful sandy beaches, boat hire in Skiathos is highly recommended. Among the most popular one is Koukounaries Beach 8 nautical miles away from the town. This golden sand beach is among the largest, where the beautiful pine forest has trees reaching ashore and creates a windless bay for motor yachts to drop anchor. There are many taverns, cafes and recreational activities such as water-sports for kids to enjoy. There are two beaches nearby, the smaller one is ideal for the most ardent naturists who want to enjoy some stress-free time together in complete isolation, the bigger one hosts a Sunday evening beach party. Another popular beach roughly 5 miles away from Skiathos Port and town is Vromolimnos, a rather busy beach during the summer months. Here you can enjoy a beautiful green landscape with white-sand and turquoise waters, there is also a lot of paddle-boarding, banana boating and scuba diving activities here too. On the south or south-west side of the island you will also come across Kanapitsa, Elia and Xanemos beach, all ideal for those looking for tranquility. On the northern side of the island, Lalaria Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Aegean, only accessible by boat about 40 minutes away from the port. For a perfect day cruise, sail here with your catamaran and enjoy a refreshing swim, a perfect treat to reward yourself from visiting the medieval ruins in Skiathos town.

A boat trip from Skiathos to Skopelos is also a perfect opportunity to enjoy a two-day or three-day cruise. Sailing east from Skiathos you will come across some lovely ports where you can enjoy an overnight stay, Panormos where you can go scuba diving in a natural bay and Glossa where you can visit the famous Loutraki beach and several others. Skopelos is nearly twice the size of Skiathos with lush landscapes, beaches with emerald waters and multiple points of interests. You can also go island-hopping from Skiathos, taking your time to visit lesser crowded destinations such as Alonissos and Skyros for moments of relaxation and tranquility.
